"Good Potential" Is it really enough?

Nowadays, we see more and more games being published and at the same time more and more being decommissioned or simply rejected by the community. This is a historical phenomenon that is similar to what we can find in the Music industry and its "Shining Star for a day".

Let's take an example of game like "Empires: Dawn of the Modern World" (SSSI) or a game that really amazed me "Armies of Exigo" (BHE). Many people might have not even heard about these games and for those ones I'll tell you that they had one thing in common "a Good Potential". Both had what it takes to be one of these best titles you would be entertained by a lot if they were broadcasted on TV or played during these very hype competitions. Both were developed by talented people who must be very proud of their achievements.

So what made them fail? Why this potential was left unexploited?
The obvious reason that anybody would come with is that their Marketing budget did not manage to handle their potential. In many cases this is right: Business Strategy might have been not to the level to get them to the level of the most known titles of this decade. Business Strategy together with Marketing Strategy are two very important factors in today's video game industry, but what about the Community strategy? We can't ignore that the end-user is going to be a part of what we call the Community. Which strategy did we take to make sure that this end-user would be passionate by our games and always answers "here" when we have a new title or an expansion pack coming out?
Did we start thinking about this aspect from day One of our development or when we were satisfied by what we did and thought that since we liked it everybody would like it?

What is the limit between the Marketing/Business Strategy and the Community Strategy?
How could we save money without penalizing our potential customers? A satisfied customer is a potential customer for the next 30 years!
